“CIES LIVING LAB ACCELERATES THE PROCESS OF INNOVATION IN THE BUILDING SECTOR”

CIES is one of the Living Labs of the BTA network. This research and development infrastructure gathers the Technological Institute of Ceramics (AICE-ITC), the Castellón City Council and the Valencia Institute of Building (IVE) as main partners. CIES Living Lab is an office building complex with a built area of 2700 m2 located at the City of Transport, the logistics and trade area of Castellón. The building houses 22 office rooms of 25 to 50 m2 each, and 6 sheds of 150 m2 each.

CIES Living Lab supports the creation of new products and new services that slow down climate change (mitigation) or increase our ability to cope with it (adaptation).

It supports as well the creation of new businesses and jobs in Europe through climate innovations.

WHY A LIVING LAB?

Living labs create unique value added mainly through the combination of two assets: on the one hand the innovations being tested within the facilities and on the other hand the daily experiences of the people living or working therein.

CIES Living Lab is thus a real scenario of experimentation where technology prototypes are tested in real-life environments, meaning that people working in the living lab are part of the prototype testing.

By conducting tests in the living labs with actual building users and in real climate conditions, researchers can evaluate the performance of new products in a more realistic manner & make suggestions for their development.

Building Technologies Accelerator

THE CHALLENGE

The main challenge is to increase the adoption of sustainable building technologies by the market and thus to overcome existing disparities between the supply & demand sides in the industry.

Some reasons for the current slow adoption of sustainable building technologies by the market are the uncertainties regarding the return on investment, risk-averse decision makers (with regards to new solutions!), unawareness of new solutions, and lack of expertise in implementing them.

WHAT IS BTA?

Building Technologies Accelerator (BTA) overcomes such challenge through the creation of a unique innovative and high quality ecosystem of industrial and academic partners. Additionally, the BTA makes use of an international network of Living Labs where new sustainable building technologies are tested, proven and showcased.

BTA aims to reduce CO2 in the building sector and to create new businesses and jobs through supporting the development and market entry of sustainable building technologies and construction services. There is a time urgency to reduce CO2 and therefore also an urgency to reduce time to market of sustainable building technologies.

HOW DOES BTA WORK?

BTA brings together the supply & demand sides in the value chain of sustainable building technologies.

The value chain:

· Market oriented product development.

· Product testing in Living Labs where we involve users and other important stakeholders to accelerate improvement of the product.

· Upscaling in real world test beds.

· Market entry

 

Living Labs Network

BTA makes use of a pan-European network of Living Labs and real world test beds in major European climatic zones (Mediterranean, Boreal, Alpine, and Continental) in order to prototype, test and develop innovations. In this way, BTA makes sure that sustainable building technologies are optimally fitted to a specific building environment and climatic conditions, and thus to final users.
